Saffron – Crocus sativus – is flowering now, and the 3 red stigmas (aka threads) are ripe for picking. At approximately $30 plus per gram in NZ, you can appreciate the value of this photo of a saffron display in a Dubai spice shop. Although commonly known to be grown from Spain through to the middle east, it is also commercially grown in NZ (on a smaller scale). I have a few corms growing and flowering in a home garden in Auckland. If you are interested in growing saffron, give it a go – you can find corms for sale online.
It is easy to grow & doesn’t require much space. Plant in full sun & keep weed free – all you cooks will be able to impress with your homegrown saffron.
